ââ
It was late afternoon when her door opened and Bethany Marcus stepped into Reiâs hospital room. To say she was surprised to see the other woman would have been an understatement and she gaped rudely as Bethany carried a vase of flowers over and set them on her bedside table.
âI hope you donât mind, but I wanted to drop in and see how you were doing.â
It took Rei a moment to find her voice. âNo. Thatâs alright. I appreciate the company. Youâre Bethany right?â she voiced the question as if she wasnât already aware of the answer.
Bethany smiled, âIn the flesh.â
âNot that I donât appreciate you coming butâ¦why are you here?â
The woman laughed and sat in the same chair that Detective Richards had vacated just an hour ago.
âI was curious about you. Justin talks about you all the time and when I heard about what happened this morningâ¦â she placed a hand against her breastbone and shook her head at the tragedy of it. âI just had to come see you.â She continued. âCheck up on how you were doing and offer a little light conversation if you werenât feeling too under the weather.â
Rei frowned apologetically. âI am a little tired.â She lied. âThe doctors say that I can get some shut eye, but theyâll be checking in on me for most of the night.â
âOh,â Bethanyâs smile looked forced now. âThatâs just too bad. How soon before you get a clean bill of health?â
âEarly morning.â
Bethany clapped her hands together smartly, obviously pleased by the news.
âYouâll be able come then?â
âCome to what?â
âStanley didnât tell you?â Rei flinched at the sound of his name but Bethany was too busy shaking her head in disgust to notice. âThat man, I swear.â She said. âI asked him to invite you along for when I go dress shopping tomorrow. I donât have any female friends and I could use a second opinion.â
âWhy me?â
Bethany laughed. âWell why not?â
Rei had no answer for that and for lack of a better response, she simply nodded.
âExcellent.â Bethany purred, getting to her feet. She stepped up to the side of Reiâs hospital bed and leaned forward to kiss her lightly on the cheek.
âGet some rest. We have a big day tomorrow.â
Then she was gone, her perfume leaving a trail of flowery pheromones in her wake.
Rei collapsed onto her pillows and blew a curl out of her face.
Wedding dresses.
Fun.
